On your trip to The Winchester Royal Hotel, why not visit Wolvesey Castle? It’s a great day out for all the family, those who are interested in history, or those wanting to find the ideal spot for a picnic and its completely admission free!
Open from 10am-5pm from April until October, this ruined castle is located next to the Winchester Cathedral. Therefore, you can make the most of your day and visit both!
Although known as a castle today, Wolvesey used to be known as a luxurious palace, however all that remains is its ruins and its gravelled areas which reflect the site of the original buildings with the grassed areas representing the outdoor spaces.
You can still feel the grandeur and how important this building would have been for the powerful Bishops of Winchester who resided here since Anglo-Saxon times.
The last great occasion Wolvesey Castle beheld was on 25th July 1554, when Queen Mary and Philip of Spain had their wedding breakfast in the East Hall.
